Reflexology—What is it?
It is a holistic healing method that helps relax and balance you by working with
reflex points located primarily in your feet and hands.
I also like to include work on your ears though not all Reflexologists
do.
During a session you are able to relax to a level that we normally can’t achieve
on our own, this is one of the key factors that helps to make it such an
effective method. When we can get
our body to let go of the stress that it holds onto (this is a physical thing,
not just mental or emotional) it is easier for our body to balance itself.
While you’re in that relaxed state I start working with the reflex points.
These points are connected to everything in your body—all of your organs,
your brain, hormonal systems, eyes, ears, spine…… everything.
I use gentle techniques to stimulate these.
Something else you may not know, Reflexology works not only on the physical but
also on emotional and mental states.
So, what can you expect from a session from me?
You would be lying on a massage table (fully clothed, this is not a massage).
First I would work on your ears for a few minutes, I use gentle but firm
strokes to do this. I like to start
out with this because not only is it a very effective area to work but it feels
really
good! It helps to relax you
quickly. Then I move on to your
feet, I’ll start with some techniques to warm up and relax your feet and
tissues, then I work on stimulating the reflex points.
To stimulate the points I use my finger tips and a little pressure,
either holding it in one place or sometimes moving over an area.
There are times when a reflex is tender, this is not uncommon, however it
should not be uncomfortable so let me know if I’m using too much pressure.
I have a fairly light touch so this usually isn’t an issue, the whole
session should be a comfortable and nurturing experience.
Hands vs Feet
I like to work with the feet for several reasons.
First of all it’s an area that most of us typically ignore and/or neglect
and it deserves some TLC. Also
because of gravity we can accumulate “stuff” in them.
Lastly, and this is the hardest to explain, I find something sacred in
doing so. However, if there is any
reason I cannot work with your feet, or you just don’t want me to, I am happy to
work your hands instead. This is
also highly effective.
More information
The art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China. It was
introduced to the West as ‘zone therapy’ in 1913 by Dr. William Fitzgerald who
noted that reflex areas on the feet and hands are inked
to other areas of the body within the same zone. In the 30’s Eunice
Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is now known as reflexology.
She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in
the corresponding part of the body.
Reflexology is a complementary therapy which works on the feet to help to heal
the whole person, not just the prevailing symptoms. It can be used to help
restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium, this gentle therapy helps
the body to work naturally to restore it’s own healthy balance.
Our daily lives are full of stress. This is a fact of life. It is also a fact
that most health problems begin as stress. Reflexology is a gentle and nurturing
yet very powerful alternative therapy.
Receiving regular sessions is an excellent way to reduce stress and bring
balance back into your life.
It is also an ideal complement to an already healthy lifestyle. Making the
choice to include reflexology in your wellness program will help maintain your
health on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level.

What Reflexology is not:
Reflexology is not just a foot rub or massage, specific techniques are used to
stimulate the reflex points and zones within the body.
It should not be painful either, there is sometimes a small amount of
discomfort that usually lessens as that area is worked.
Let the Reflexologist know of tender spots, they should not work outside
of your comfort level.
